  1. A Foundation of Sound Leadership.

    1. Qualifications:

      • Not "mature character instead of gifts."
      • But "mature character prior to giftedness."

    2. What about women in leadership? Two restrictions:

      • Office of Elder. Titus 1:6-9; 1 Timothy 3:1-7
      • Ongoing discipling roles over men. 1 Timothy 2:12

  2. Why the Demands for Mature Character?

    • To serve as "examples to the flock." 1 Peter 5:1-4

    • Because of the unique pressures of the role.

  3. If You Aspire to Leadership ... That's Good!

Understand the need to prepare. You need ...

    • To know the Lord (be a "believer")
    • To have something to say--knowledge of the truth, and spiritual wisdom (be a "disciple")
    • The disposition of a "servant"
    • To gain a track record in both declaration and demonstration

"Each church is free to establish whatever form of organization is suitable and useful for itself, for God has prescribed nothing specific about this."

--John Calvin (1509-1564)

"I believe Paul is saying in this epistle [1 Timothy 3:1-7] that the form of government, important as it is, is not as important as the caliber and character of the men who are holding office."

--J. Vernon McGee (1904-1988)
