  1. Founded On the Right Leaders.

    1. Church offices found in the New Testament are Elders/Overseers/Pastors, and Deacons.

    2. Looking at the chief office. Titles:

      • Presbuteros - Elder
      • Episkopos - Overseer, or bishop
      • Poimen - Pastor or shepherd

The titles are used interchangeably for the same
      office. Acts 20:17,28; 1 Peter 5:1-2

  2. Observations.

    • Elders are always described in the plural, and as appointed by other qualified leaders. Acts 14:23

    • The main qualifications are mature character demonstrated over time.

    • The principle: Spiritual leaders are not "picked"; they are identified.

    • Functions: Teach and defend sound doctrine; provide a stable center for, and oversee, the church's life and ministry; empower the ministers (Ephesians 4:11-16).

"Each church is free to establish whatever form of organization is suitable and useful for itself, for God has prescribed nothing specific about this."

--John Calvin (1509-1564)

"I believe Paul is saying in this epistle [1 Timothy 3:1-7] that the form of government, important as it is, is not as important as the caliber and character of the men who are holding office."

--J. Vernon McGee (1904-1988)
