What is Kids Eat Free?

Kids Eat Free is a summer ministry that Crossroads is involved in. Many children from the St. Charles Apartment Complex are part of the government free lunch meal program during the school year. However, during the summer, this government program is not available. Crossroads working with Christian Community Action and other local churches adopt various areas in the community and provide this service during the summer months. Teams of volunteers meet in the CBC cafe at 10:30am to make sack lunches and deliver them to the apartment complex.

Volunteer Information []

Lunch Makers
Be in the CBC cafe kitchen by 10:30am. The lunch requirements and all the food will be in the CBC kitchen. The instructions for the lunches you are making for the day will be posted on the side of the refrigerator. Set up assembly lines. Children are great at setting out the number of lunch bags, drinks etc. and have them start. When lunches are finished put in boxes to be delivered. This entire system works best if one of the volunteers for this process is also the one who will be delivering to St. Charles.

Delivery to St. Charles
Lunches are to be delivered to St. Charles by 11:45. We ask that the delivery crew hand out the lunches and use this as an opportunity to interact and build relationships with the children that live at the complex. We use apartment number 9 as a clubhouse which is located behind the main office. Lunches are to be taken to this room and handed out to the children as they come. In the clubhouse are coloring books, games, etc. that can be used. The children can eat their lunch while they play. If you have children, this is a great way to allow all the children to interact with each other. In addition, there is sports equipment in the room and can be used to play on the field in the middle of the complex. The process is:

  • Leave CBC no later than 11:30

  • Check out a key from the CBC receptionist upstairs - directions and further instructions will be available when you pick up the key

  • Open apartment 9 and hand out lunches and allow them play time

  • Before departing, return all equipment, toys etc. back to their proper places and clean up apartment if necessary

  • Stay until 1:00p.m. handing out lunches, if you choose to stay longer - great!!

  • Lock up room and take left over lunches to the main office - they will hand out to other children that come later

  • In the event you run out of lunches or have more than 10 remaining, inform LeAnn Hunsucker or Mike Farney.
