The older I have gotten the more I have realized how hard it is to balance life, school, friends, family, and serving in a local church, especially for high school students. If we are all honest we could use a little more free time. I'm talking serious free time here, no tests, deadlines, or work...nothing. Imagine a weekend, two full days, where all you have to do is nothing. No meetings, no gatherings, no deadlines...it's just you, your closest friends, and time to not worry about what's next. We call it Pine Cove No Agenda weekend.
Now that might sound like a crazy idea to do with a bunch or High School students, or you might be thinking, “Why would I pay to send my child on something like that?!?” I thought the same thing going into it last year. What is amazing though is that when we carve out space to slow down and relax, we realize what is truly important. It is a time to recharge, catch up with others, and find that our pursuit of Christ is who we are all the time, no matter what we are doing. Once we slow down we see conversations about life and faith come up throughout the weekend. It's our version of Deuteronomy 6 that says…
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
Now that you are convinced and excited about you and/or your student going, let me give you some information about the weekend –
We leave Friday, January 13th, at 2:30pm (LISD has early release that day) and get back Sunday night (the 15th) around 10pm
Cost is $130, which covers transportation, lodging, and all meals. This year we are offering ½ off to friends of CBC High School students. If your friend wants to go, they can for only $65! There will be a place on the online form to put that information in. Tell your friends!
